I just bumped into Tory Burch

She is the cute and trendy fashion designer that almost every woman knows. In my case, I had no idea who she was until a girl I knew pointed her out. My first run-in with Ms. Burch was on an elevator in The Pierre Hotel in New York City. She walked into the elevator while I was on my way to Fox News to do an interview about two years ago. I was wearing my favorite suit. It is a black Armani suit with a blue Canali shirt and a light and dark purple striped Canali tie. Ms. Burch looked at me and said in a soft voice, "that is a beautiful tie." I thanked her and she got off the elevator. The elevator operator said to me, "did you know who that was?" I said no and she said, "that was the fashion designer Tory Burch." I smiled and thought to myself, I have heard the name but wasn't sure who she was or what she did. When I got home from that trip I told a few female friends about my encounter and several of those friends screamed or laughed and said, "Oh my God. I love her stuff." I assume then, I was dressed well that day to have a fashion "icon" complement me.

You are probably wondering why this travel reporter has suddenly turned to a fashion correspondent. I have not. That encounter happened at one of my favorite hotels in New York City. The Pierre is owned by Taj Hotels and it is a five-star property located about 50 steps from Central Park on 61st Street.

5 Reasons to stay at The Pierre

       1) The Employees  The staff at The Pierre is amazing. They cater to all your needs. I was traveling with my dog and they sent up someone to deliver dog bowls, a doggy bed and treats. The hotel still uses elevator operators. Guests don't touch the buttons, the elevator operators do. They are also very nice and will engage you in interesting conversation. They can answer questions about the hotel and they even carry doggy treats.

        2) The suites at The Pierre - The regular rooms at The Pierre are large and the views of the park from the higher floors are spectacular. Make sure you ask for a high floor if you want to have a view of Central Park. If you want to stay in a very large room, ask for a city-view suite. These suites on on floors 4 through 9. The city-view suites at The Pierre are wonderful and they are some of largest rooms in New York City. You actually get two rooms with something I call, a "Maxibar." They don't have minibars at The Pierre. They have these huge "Maxibars" with all sorts of treats. The Pierre is not a place to stay if you are looking for a deal. They have promotions but this is a hotel where you stay when you want to do something really special or romantic. You can see them on their web site here: The Pierre Hotel - New York City

I looked at rates in May of 2012 and for a two night stay from May 10th to the 12th, it was $2,250.00. That is the total price for a suite that is very large with a living room. It's not inexpensive at all but the room they offer for that price is amazing.

       3) Le Caprice - Le Caprice is the restaurant in the lobby of The Pierre. You can have a tasty breakfast here while you stay at the hotel or you can just stop in, even if you're not a guest. It feels like a classy diner to me. I say that because they have a counter where you can sit and people watch while you eat. It's the only restaurant where I have seen them put your toast in a mail holder. The dining room re-captures the pop-chic of the original London brasserie with a series of photographs depicting the original sixties super model Jean Shrimpton shot in 1962 by David Bailey in New York.

       4) The Location - The hotel's location is also perfect. It is on 5th Avenue between 60th and 61st streets. This is the most elegant neighborhood in Manhattan. Central Park is right across the street. FAO Schwartz is two blocks away and most of the great shopping in New York City is right there on 5th Avenue and another block away on Madison. There is a subway stop less than half a block away for the N Train and The Pierre even offers a free car service to guests who need to go within a few miles of the hotel.

       5) The Beds - I have slept in many hotels around the world. The Pierre has some of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and the rooms are very quiet. Even on the lower floors, you don't hear the traffic outside or hear your neighbors next door.

There is a good chance you will run into Tory Burch while you are at The Pierre. You may run into other celebrities as well. I can't tell you why. Mary Tyler Moore and Barbara Walters both had their wedding receptions at The Pierre. My lips are sealed but if you do a little research on the Internet, you may figure it out. Here is a link to some of The Pierre's history. History of The Pierre
